What is Glycerin?
Glycerin, also known as glycerol (E422), is a “naturally occurring sugar alcohol present in various fats and oils”. It is commonly found in foods, cosmetics, soaps, and pharmaceuticals. Derived from either plants or animals, glycerol plays a versatile role in food manufacturing - which is why you'll find it in everything from ice cream and chewing gum to energy bars, soft candies, and even spice blends.

Why is Glycerin Used in Food and Drink Products?
Glycerol serves several important functions in food production:
- Moisture Retention: Prevents foods from drying out.
- Sweetener: Adds mild sweetness (about 60% as sweet as sugar)
- Texture Enhancement: Softens, thickens, and improves consistency.
- Emulsification: Helps combine oil and water-based ingredients
- Preservative: Helps extend the shelf life of products.
Why is Glycerin Used in Slush Drinks?
Slushie manufacturers, including Slushy Jack's, use glycerin to:
- Prevent the formation of large ice crystals, keeping drinks smooth.
- Maintains the signature slush texture for longer.
- Contributes mild sweetness without adding sugar.
- Distributes flavours evenly throughout the drink.
- Acts as a stabiliser to prevent the drink from freezing solid.
Slushy Jack's Approach
Founded in 2021, Slushy Jack's was created to provide a no-sugar slush drink alternative that is both socially and environmentally conscious.
Today, Slushy Jack’s offers 3 distinct product ranges, each designed for different target audiences:
- Original: Glycerol-free, with low sugar, suitable for all consumers
- No Sugar: Contains glycerin, not recommended for children under 4 years or weighing less than 14 kilograms
- Wild: Glycerol-free, with low sugar and made with 3% real fruit juice, suitable for all consumers
This product strategy aligns with the UK’s Soft Drinks Industry Levy (SDIL), commonly known as the "sugar tax," introduced in April 2018 to reduce sugar content in soft drinks and tackle childhood obesity.
Childhood obesity remains a serious public health issue in the UK. In 2022, 15% of children aged 2 to 15 were classified as obese, and an additional 27% were overweight - indicating serious health risks for a large portion of young people.
Recently, there has also been recent media attention regarding the presence of glycerin in slushies. It’s important to note that none of the 21 reported cases mentioned in these articles have been linked to Slushy Jack’s products. In response to growing concerns, Frozen Brothers - the parent company of Slushy Jack’s - has proactively introduced glycerol-free options through its new product ranges: Original and Wild.
Benefits of Glycerin in Drinks
- Sugar Alternative: Ideal for people reducing sugar intake, including those with diabetes.
- Digestive Tolerance: Glycerol is well-absorbed in the small intestine and generally well-tolerated.
- Blood Sugar Management: Does not trigger insulin release, helping maintain stable blood glucose levels.
- Athletic Performance: Some studies suggest glycerol may enhance hydration and cardiovascular performance.
Safety Considerations and Limitations
While glycerol is generally considered safe for most people, there are some important considerations:
- Age Restrictions: Not recommended for children under 4 years old or those weighing less than 14 kilograms, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
- Consumption Limits: Excessive consumption may lead to side effects. Products with glycerol should be consumed in moderation.
- Potential side effects: According to PrimaryCare:24: “an excessive intake can cause side effects such as headaches, dizziness, bloating, nausea, and diarrhoea”. In rare cases, rapid or excessive intake may lead to glycerol intoxication, with symptoms such as hypoglycaemia and loss of consciousness - especially in small children.
